What is CAT Exam?
CAT Exam (Common Admission Examination) is a computer-based selection test administered by the Indian Institutes Management (IIMs) as a precondition for admission to their business administration programs. In addition to the IIMs, the CAT is also a prerequisite for admission to many other prestigious management colleges throughout India, including institutes such as S.P Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Management Development Institute (Gurgaon), Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS).

CAT Exam Eligibility
Applicants need to meet the following requirements in order to be considered for CAT:
- A Bachelor’s Degree should be retained and a minimum of 50 per cent marks or equivalent CGPA should be secured. Students belonging to any of the groups reserved, such as Scheduled Tribe (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC), and Persons with Disabilities (PWD) or Differently Abled (DA) must have marks of at least 45%.
- The degree shall be awarded by any university included in an act of the central or state legislature in India, or by any other educational institution founded by an act of Parliament, or declared to be considered a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or shall have an equivalent qualification recognized by MHRD, India.
- Also eligible to apply are students who appear for the final year of their bachelor’s degree and candidates who have met their graduation requirements and are awaiting results. If chosen, candidates will be permitted to enter the program on a temporary basis only if he/she submits a certificate from the Principal / Registrar of her / his College / Institute (issued on or before 30 June 2024) stating that the specific applicant has fulfilled all the criteria for obtaining a bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification on the date of the certificate.

Cat Exam Syllabus
There is no predefined syllabus for the CAT test. The syllabus comes mostly from Maths’ middle school subjects, and English with some generic logical reasoning questions. Some of the CAT-syllabus specifics are:
- CAT Quantitative Aptitude: The CAT quantitative aptitude syllabus covers primarily Class 8-10 topics such as geometry, algebra, number system, etc.
- CAT Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation: The section on logical reasoning is rather general and contains a wide variety of questions based on the seating arrangement, direction sense test, etc. The segment on data interpretation contains questions focused more on the case lets and graphs of the data.
- CAT Verbal Skill & Comprehension of Reading: A few questions are accompanied by comprehension passages in this segment. In addition, few of the grammar-based questions are asked, such as the completion of sentences, jumbled sentences, etc.
CAT Exam Registration
Registration to the CAT test is only available online. The application form is published on the official CAT website by conducting IIM, and applicants are expected to fill in the details. Registration for CAT 2020 is scheduled to start from week 1 of August and run until the last week of September. There will also be a correction window available later. Eligibility Verification
If an applicant is granted the following eligibility check for WAT and PI by either of the IIMs:
- Certificate of marks and diploma
Shortlisted applicants are expected to produce all original mark sheets and to submit certified photocopies at the time of an interview to confirm their eligibility. Often, when an applicant is chosen for a specific course, the original graduation certificate, mark sheets, and approved copies of the actual semesters/years of the program shall also be required at the time of the program accession.
- Reservation category
If you are shortlisted, you must display your original caste/class and/or disability certificate and present a copy of the certificate for ST, SC, NC-OBC, and DA candidates when you are interrogated. The original certificate of qualification and a certified copy of it will be required to be submitted for the review of an applicant chosen for a program.
- Final Graduation Year Candidates
Applicants who have appeared for the final year of their bachelor’s or equivalent qualification exam shall present an original certificate from the Principal, Registrar, Director of the University, attesting that the applicant has obtained 50 or an equivalent rating, or equivalent, (45% for SC, ST, and DA candidates) on the basis of the current grades/markings available at the time of their bachelor’s degree. The copy of the original certificate (for category candidates) must also be filed attesting.
- If candidates are selected for post-graduate IIM programs, they are authorized to enter a PROVISIONAL ONLY scheme, if they apply a certificate to their college/ institute’s registrar indicating that all criteria, including the additional exams, have been met if any (results can be waited for) for the backing of candidates; In addition, a minimum mark or equivalent grade should be given and a certified copy of the graduation marks and certificate of graduation must be given.
- The deadline is 31 December 2020 (Tentative) for submission of the mark sheet and certificate. In these cases, provisional acceptance shall also be canceled if it is determined that a certificate is inaccurate or has any inconsistencies at a later date. In these cases, provisional admission may also be canceled. In the event that an applicant fails to meet all bachelor’s degree requirements on and before June (last week) 2020, IIM does not allow any person to join any of their programs. The IIMs will encourage any applicant to join after June 2020.
Admission Process
It is worth noting that individual IIM shortlists independently candidates for their second selection point. A written examination of ability (WAT) and personal interview (PI) are included in the selection procedure. The individual output will play an important role in the overall selection process in the CAT 2020 review. The IIMs often take into account previous academic reports of applicants, relevant work experience, and others like feedback during the admission process, while selecting and rating applicants at different levels.
