Situated in Tamil Nadu, South India, the TamilNadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University is situated in the southern region of Chennai, formerly known as Madras. The distance between Chennai Central Railway Station and Chennai International and National Airports is roughly 12 kilometers and 6 kilometers, respectively. Honourably named for the late Honourable Dr. M.G. Ramachandran (M.G.R), a former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, this esteemed university is the nation's second largest health sciences institution and one of India's top medical schools.

The State Government has been debating the necessity of establishing a distinct medical university in Tamilnadu with the sole focus of handling medical education and research at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate levels for a number of years.

In addition to contemporary medicine, the Committee was asked to review and recommend enhancements for the Siddha, Ayurveda, and Unani traditional systems of Indian medicine. The intention behind the establishment of the Medical University in Tamil Nadu was to foster research and facilitate coordination between contemporary medicine's educational and training institutions and other Indian medical systems, including dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and medicine. The Tamil Nadu government founded the Medical University based on the Committee's report.
