First, candidates have to register online through the CAT official website which usually comes in August and ends in September only. In this step, applicants have to complete personal and study, work experience information, choose test venues, and pay for a test.

The next step is the written CAT examination that traditionally takes place in mid – November to early December period. The exam consists of three sections: i. e. , Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). A direct shortlisting of candidates is then done based on the general performance exhibited by the candidates in the respective participating institutes.

After a candidate gets shortlisted they have to take the second round, which mainly includes a Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI). Each institute has its own specific criteria depending on the course that they offer; sometimes they take into consideration performance in previous academic years, work experience and extracurricular activities.

Lastly, relative to the extent of performance on these stages, institutes publish their admission lists and students who have been called forward to take their places pay the admission fees and forward several necessary documents.
