The first person to establish health education and care in Assam was Dr. John Berry White, MRCS, a British Surgeon employed by the East India Company. In the years 1898–1899, he founded the "Berry White Medical School" in Dibrugarh, Assam. Over time, this medical school underwent upgrades, and on November 3, 1947, the Assam Medical College was founded in Dibrugarh, Assam. It is now the state's original medical college.

The demand for health care and health education was rising, and Assam needed new medical institutions badly. The decision to establish a second medical college in Assam was made in 1959 by the State Government, which was led by Mr. B.P. Chaliha, the Chief Minister of Assam at the time, Mr. Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed, the Finance Minister, and Mr. Rupram Brahma, the Medical Minister. The State Government established an expert committee on November 7, 1959, to look into the matter and provide a report.

Consequently The magnificent journey of Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati began on September 20, 1960, at Jalukbari and continued via Panbazar, Guwahati, Assam, to this permanent site of Narakasur foothills, Bhangagarh. The current Gauhati Medical College facility was opened in 1968 by Mr. B. K. Nehru, the Assamese governor at the time. The hospital moved in 1980, and additional hospital space was added by 1984.

GMC&H has been a constant observer of this remarkable advancement in the medical sciences within the State. This massive institution has produced a great number of doctors, specialists, super specialists, nurses, and paramedical staff who have worked or are currently working in various areas of the country and overseas during its more than 60 years of existence. They have been able to serve as the cornerstones of healthcare services both domestically and abroad because of the solid academic and practical foundations they established while attending this university.
