The parent organisation of MGMIHS is the Mahatma Gandhi Mission Trust, which was founded in 1982 by Hon. Shri Kamalkishore Kadam with the forward-thinking goal of delivering high-quality education via the use of cutting-edge and dynamic pedagogical approaches. Since its founding, the Trust has dedicated itself to delivering high-quality health care, education in schools, and higher education. The MGM Trust was founded in Nanded, Maharashtra, and over time it expanded to serve Noida [New Delhi] in Uttar Pradesh as well as Aurangabad, Navi Mumbai, and Parbhani in Maharashtra.

The Trust's efforts are evidenced by the network of schools in the fields of engineering, architecture, medicine, nursing, management, computer science and IT, bioinformatics and biotechnology, fine arts, and journalism.

All of these institutions are managed competently by the trustees, Drs. Ankushrao N. Kadam (B.E. ), P.M. Jadhav (FRCS, U.K.), S.N. Kadam (FRCP, Edin.), Nitin N. Kadam (MD, DCH), and U.N. Kadam (B.E.). The chairman of the trust is Shri Kamalkishore Kadam, M.Tech. (IIT-Mumbai), who also served as the former Minister of Education for Maharashtra. Over the years, the institutions under the MGM Trust have established a reputation for distinction in their respective fields. The Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, New Delhi, has issued Notification No. F.9-21/2005-U.3 (A) dated August 30, 2006, designating the MGM Deemed University as a Deemed to be University, i.e., "MGM Institute of Health Sciences."

The Deemed to be University status was granted to two of its medical colleges, located in Aurangabad and Navi Mumbai, and the Mahatma Gandhi Mission Institute of Health Sciences (MGMIHS) commenced official operations in 2006.
