Whenever a student is seeking a management course, confusion occurs about whether to choose an MBA or PGDM.

MBA & PGDM courses are equivalent to each other as both of them are business-oriented course that focuses on management skills. However, there are a few differences to look into. So, this article will clear the confusion on what is the difference between an MBA and PGDM?

1. Full-Form

MBA stands for Masters in Business Administration and PGDM stands for Post Graduation Diploma in Management.

2. Degree Vs Diploma:

Management institutes and colleges affiliated with a university only offer an MBA degree. Institutes not affiliated with any university are autonomous colleges. Such autonomous colleges don’t offer a degree, they offer a diploma program i.e. Post Graduation Diploma in Management.  PGDM is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

3. Syllabus/Curriculum:

MBA’s curriculum is accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The MBA syllabus is more of a theory-based study.  Whereas, PGDM focuses more on technical aspects, and moves around industry exposure.
As the syllabus of an MBA is as per university guidelines, It is fixed and doesn’t change frequently. On the other hand, the PGDM syllabus is from autonomous institutes. So they can change it frequently as per the rising industry trends in the market. That’s a key difference between an MBA and a PGDM.

4. Fees

MBA fees are low if compared with PGDM fees. The fees for an MBA are according to University norms.

5. Pursuing Higher Education:

If you are willing to pursue higher education, after completion of MBA and PGDM. PGDM is considered as a diploma while MBA will be considered as a degree. However, most of the recognized institutes abroad give preference to PGDM students as they have more industrial-oriented knowledge over MBA students who have only theoretical knowledge.
