Higher education is offered throughout all of India at the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, or BITS Pilani. BITS’ main goal is to “teach young people who are able and enthusiastic to develop and implement such ideas, methods, procedures, and information.” The Institute is the realisation of the founder, late Mr. G.D. Birla, an accomplished industrialist, activist for Indian independence, and close friend of the late Mr. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi). Beginning as a modest school in the early 1900s, it developed into a collection of schools for higher learning, spanning from the humanities to engineering, until 1964, when all of these institutions merged to form a distinctive Indian University with a strong international reputation. The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, or BITS, Pilani, is the name given to this institution of higher learning.

Students from all around India who were admitted based on merit have received the best quality technical education from BITS over the years. Its graduates can be found all over the world in engineering, scientific, and business fields. BITS represents the development of Indian technical prowess and the “can-do” spirit of entrepreneurship, particularly as it arises from the private sector. BITS is situated on the Vidya Vihar campus, which is close to the Rajasthani town of Pilani.
